My husband, Graham and I established Sierra Vista Alpacas 12 years ago and have been breeding and showing Alpacas throughout New Zealand and also in Australia over those years.
Initially we based our herd around white/fawn alpaca but soon took up the challenge of breeding most colours, especially black, followed by the browns and darker fawn colours. A more recent development is our diversification into Suri lines, which we are finding very exciting. I have spent time in Peru, Canada and Australia to gain further insight into these marvellous, unique animals. Since we have been involved we have seen a huge improvement in animal conformation and fleece qualities of the NZ herd and also in our own.
Some years ago I took on the huge commitment to become a NZ accredited Alpaca judge and achieved this goal three years ago. I have officiated throughout the country, judging huacaya and suri in both breed and fleece classes. To me, the show scene should be viewed as a positive experience and personal education. My approachable personality and willingness to discuss animal attributes and or shortcomings where my opinion is sought in an honest and straightforward manner, reflects my commitment towards this view.
Shows should also be seen as a gathering of individuals with a common interest who wish to take the opportunity to see alpaca from other herds and to enjoy the opportunities for intellectual exchange in a friendly and convival manner.
The Temuka & Geraldine Show is held at the Winchester Showgrounds on SH1 about 30Km north of Timaru. Both Temuka and Geraldine have farming and lifestyle block communities. This is the first time that an alpaca section has been held at this popular show. It is a good opportunity to show your beautiful animals as there is growth potential for the industry in this area, since there are currently only a few breeders. The show itself is normally well attended by members of the public (depending on the weather of course).
Perpetual Trophies have been sponsored by Awatere Alpacas for the Supreme Champion Huacaya, by NZ Summerhill Alpacas for the Premier Fancy Huacaya and by Fairhaven Alpacas for the Supreme Champion Suri.
Sponsorship opportunities are available for Age and Colour Championships at $25 per Championship
