Judges Profile

Kate Mander

pejo.pacas@xtra.co.nz
Kate Mander has been breeding alpacas for the past 10 years on a lifestyle block in the foothills of the Southern Alps, 30 minutes west of Christchurch. Her focus is on breeding black and coloured alpacas. This passion for alpacas has taken her from New Zealand and Australia to as far afield as Chile and Peru to select for her breeding programme. In turn, her black alpacas are now selling throughout NZ and as far away as Germany, Holland and Norway.

Prior to alpacas taking over her life, she had a diverse career as an aid worker in Asia, including working in Pakistan with Afghan refugees, and as a midwife and neonatal intensive care nurse in the UK and NZ.

Kate has been involved with all aspects of showing from convening, stewarding, and exhibiting, to the role of show rep on both National and Regional councils. She is currently running the apprentice judge training in NZ.

Kate has been judging extensively in both New Zealand and Australia having qualified as an AANZ judge in 2005 and an AAA judge in 2007. She is also a past president of the Alpaca Association in New Zealand.

General Information

The 100th Banks Peninsula A&P Show at Little River will include an Alpaca section (fleece only) for the first time.  As this is a new section for the show at Little River, the A&P Committee is enthusiastic about this addition to their show.  A fancy section has been included, with an award for Premeir Fancy Fleece.  Special Awards will also go to The Most Successful Huacaya breeder and Most Successful Suri breeder, based on the average of 3 or more fleeces entered.  The convenors look forward to strong support from exhibitors around the country.  Fleeces will be posted back to those exhibitors who are unable to collect them at the end of the day.  An entry ticket will be send to all exhibitors and we'd like to see breeders come out to the show to collect their fleeces.
