Stud Servicing

Stud servicing is an important aspect of the alpaca industry.  Many breeders do not make the investment in their own herd sire at the beginning and thus rely on purchasing stud services from other breeders.

Every year in August/September AANZ produces a Herd Sire index magazine listing males available in New Zealand.  This magazine is provided free of charge to all AANZ members.  To order a copy of the latest issue contact the AANZ office.

As alpaca reproduction differs from most other livestock there is no availability of AI (Artificial Insemination) so stud services are carried out in variety of ways, the most common being On Farm, Mobile, or Drive By.

Receptive Female  Rejection

On Farm Stud Servicing

With on farm services the female alpaca travels to the farm of the male and remains there until pregnancy is confirmed.

Mobile Stud Servicing

Mobile stud servicing is when the male alpaca travels to the farm of the female and remains for the time it takes for the service to be carried out.

Drive By Stud Servicing

A drive by stud service is where the female alpaca travels to the farm of the male and remains for the time it takes to carry out the service then returns home.
